Research grants

CIMA’s charter to advance the science of management accountancy forms the core of our academic research strategy and guides our research goals. CIMA is keen to identify and work with academics and practitioners who are doing research in the area of management accounting and can offer insight into different subject areas. Each application is judged on its academic rigour, quality, originality and potential contribution to CIMA’s research objectives and accountants in business.

Types of research grants

CIMA provides the following kinds of research grant - Topic Specific , Ad-hoc and Seedcorn. Our Topic Specific Call for proposals from experienced researchers examining the Management accounting in building a resilient and sustainable future is now open. More detail is provided below.

Case study grants.

This initiative is targeted at  PhD and post-doctoral researchers from anywhere in the world. We offer up to £3,000 to enable them to produce a case study of relevance to our members  based on ongoing or completed research.

Our 2021/22 call for sustainability related case studies is now closed.

Topic specific grants

Grants of up to GBP 25,000 are available to experienced research teams globally to undertake research into specific areas of management accounting.

We are currently calling for proposals from experienced researchers which examine the role of management accounting in building a resilient and sustainable future.

Seedcorn grants

There are two types of seedcorn funding available.

Early career research grants- for:

  • PhD students in the final stage of their doctorate.
  • Post-doctoral researchers ( within 5 years of their doctorate) - who have not previously received a CIMA early career grant.

Feasibility study grants - for:

  • Experienced researchers with an idea that they want to develop.
  • Researchers to undertake feasibility studies as a preliminary to in-depth empirical research.

Ad-hoc research grants

Ad-hoc research grants proposals must be innovative and present a novel opportunity for CIMA. The project budget should not exceed GBP 30,000 and the project must be completed within 18 months.

The adhoc process is different to our topic-led initiatives because:

  1. It allows researchers to put forward innovative proposals that fall outside the topic areas of CIMA’s main research initiatives.
  2. It provides an opportunity for researchers to put forward grant proposals outside the set timelines that the topic led initiatives demand.

Process

CIMA's ad-hoc grant process takes place in two stages:

Stage one

The applicant needs to complete a two-page application form which should provide CIMA with a project outline, proposed outputs and demonstrate how the project will be of benefit to CIMA. These can be submitted at any time throughout the year.

If an applicant’s stage 1 application is successful, the research team will be notified and the proposal will progress to the next stage.

Stage two

The applicant will be asked to complete a more comprehensive form. This form will be sent directly to the applicant by CIMA (please note that this form will not be available on the CIMA website - it will only be sent via email to applicants who have completed stage one).
